Karl received his BA in psychology and East Asian studies from Simon’s Rock College, in Great Barrington, MA. He received his Masters in Oriental Medicine degree from the New England School of Acupuncture, then in Newton, MA. He studied both Chinese and Japanese style acupuncture, orthopedic needling techniques, and Chinese herbal medicine (although he doesn’t prescribe herbs, he leaves that to his wife). He is a Diplomat in Acupuncture from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and he has practiced in both New York (#004510) and Massachusetts (#) for the last 12 years.
A large portion of that time was spent working outside of Boston, building a business with his wife and partner, Marcie. With that established, they both shifted their focus to Upstate New York, where Karl has always wanted to end up. Establishing themselves in Columbia County, Karl and Marcie now want to help bring care through acupuncture to their community.
Karl treats his patients with utmost care and aims to provide what each needs to best heal their ailments. Through acupuncture, moxibustion, manual therapy (tui na, cupping, gua sha), and education, he empowers patients to learn about what is going on, to recognize healthy behaviors and provide themselves a way to engage in their own healing, all to offer a roadmap of how to heal. He has treated a wide array of conditions and considers himself a ‘general practitioner’, but does do a lot with pain and orthopedics. Karl is somewhat ‘heavy handed’ in treatment, but his gentle approach softens this as to always encourage ease and comfort. He sees all members of the family, anyone of any age, and in any place in life.
When he’s not providing treatment, Karl is a Buddhist priest at a local temple, and a family man, fathering two beautiful young children. He enjoys cycling, hitting the slopes, woodworking and handyman projects.

Marcie received her Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from the New England School of Acupuncture, the oldest college of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine in the United States. She is licensed to practice Acupuncture in both Massachusetts and New York (license # XXXXX) and holds a Diplomat in Oriental Medicine from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Marcie has treated patients with many different health conditions in a variety of clinical settings, including community health centers, public health projects, inpatient and outpatient hospital clinics, and private practice.
From 2010 to 2021, Marcie established an acupuncture practice in MA and grew it into a multi-disciplinary integrative medicine practice employing 12 holistic health practitioners from a variety of backgrounds.
In 2021, her and her husband, Karl, relocated their family to Columbia County, NY, and Marcie shifted her responsibilities at that office to providing practitioner support and business development. She refocused her clinical efforts on Bower Family Acupuncture here in NY.
In the treatment room, Marcie utilizes techniques from Traditional Chinese Acupuncture, including acupuncture, cupping, gua sha manual therapy, and moxibustion. She also practices Chinese Herbal Medicine and makes herbal recommendations to acupuncture patients when appropriate. Marcie treats babies, kids, teens, adults, and seniors, and loves working with whole families to achieve their health goals.
Marcie has a gentle treatment style and is well-suited for anxious patients. (Although she can absolutely use deeper, more orthopedic techniques when the condition requires it!)
Outside of the office, Marcie enjoys spending time with her husband and their two young children, as well as running, hiking, reading, and trying to beat Karl’s scores on the Peloton.
